E. Fuller Torrey to Debate Thomas Szasz
On Wednesday, October 30th at Towson State University in Maryland, Dr. E. Fuller Torrey will debate Thomas Szasz on "Serious mental illness: what to do about it.".
Thomas Szasz is an aging ex-psychiatrist who claims to believe there is no such thing as mental illness--that it is merely a label society uses to identify people who are different. It's sort of like belonging to the 'flat-earth society'. He ignores all the scientific neurobiological evidence and makes his money writing 'mental illness is a myth' books. He has a shrinking (no pun intended) following, including many scientologists/members of the citizens commission on human rights (sic). Unfortunately, the media plays disproportionate attention to him and his fellow traveler: Peter Breggin.
Fuller Torrey, as you know, is a leading discoverer of the neurobiology underlying schizophrenia. He will attempt to convince Szasz he is wrong, that mental illness really exists. (Hard to beleive it's 1996).
