Neurodevelopment and high risk of psychosis

Radiological findings suggest a disturbance of neurodevelopment in people at risk of psychosis, which may predispose them to the condition. (Note: schizophrenia is one type of psychosis).

Researchers from the University Hospital Basel in Switzerland have found a higher proportion of radiological abnormalities in patients at risk of schizophrenia and those with a first episode of psychosis than in depressed and mentally healthy individuals.

"The different types of radiological abnormalities in first episode patients and individuals at high risk of psychosis suggest that the underlying cerebral disruption in prodrome and psychosis may result in a propensity toward brain abnormalities," the team reports.
