Technical Problems With Discussion Board Posts

We're aware of the current technical problems you're experiencing (that prevent you from posting messages in the discussion boards), and we're working hard on getting things back to normal right now. We've run into a number of problems.

This may take a little while, but we hope to have things running as normal by sometime on Friday, December 14th.

When we do succeed - we will announce it here on this blog. We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused you, our audience, and appreciate your patience as we work to fix the problem.

Actually, I've found that the discussion board here was very old and outdated. It was poorly designed, and I found it to be pretty much useless. Google and Yahoo both offer significantly better quality discussion boards, and the people there are also generally pretty nice.

Actually I'm really disappointed with how a lot of things are set up on this site. The only good thing that you have going here is that 1. you own the rights to the "www.schizophrenia.com" domain and 2. You keep regularly updated posts on your new blog and sz related information. If I were you I would find a web page designer to come in and rearrange some of the things on here so it is less disorganized and easier to look at. Especially if the viewers here have mental disorders and already have a hard enough time keeping things in their head organized, it would be nice to offer them a site that is simpler to use.

Cory you are bordering on trolling. Just because the forum software doesn't meet with your approval that doesn't make it 'pretty much useless'. This is a first rate support resource with a veritable array of useful and supportive posts.

If schizophrenia.com was to go down the route of using a new type board then Vbulletin is much better than what is offered by google or yahoo in terms of quality.

Hi folks,

First of all - Luke, our standard policy here it to delete posts that are not relevant to the discussion or the blog posting - and unfortunately that is the case with many of your posts. Your posts would be find in the discussion areas (when we get them up and running again) but they are inappropriate for the discussion blogs - unless the are directly relevant to the topic of the blog.

Secondly - Cory - Our focus here at this site is getting important information out to our readers and making it easily available - and so far over the past 10 years we've put up about 15,000 pages of information on schizophrenia. If you can find a more valuable source of schizophrenia information in the world - we encourage you to use it, and please let us know.

You are certainly right about the discussion board software that we've been using. Its old - but its also difficult to find one that meets the needs of the 50,000 visitors we have and also doesn't cost an arm and a leg. There is much free stuff out there - but we don't have the time and resources necessary to maintain it.

We are, however, upgrading the discussion software to a leading industry software package called Jive Forums:

http://www.jivesoftware.com/products/forums/

Its used by ESPN, and other leading web sites.

We think you'll like it.

Bravo! Best news I've heard on this site in ages. The messageboard is old and needs replaced. A new one would be sweet. Do you have a skin designed yet? Or need one made?

I have been to Google and Yahoo boards. They are not that great, IMHO. Hope the problem gets resolved. Thanks for your efforts administering the board....Robert

I hope I didn't sound too critical before. It's more constructive criticism than anything else. I just wish the links were more organized and more searchable. You're definitely right that you have tons of information on the many different parts of schizophrenia, and I agree that it would be hard to find another web site with more than you, but I think it could be better presented and organized.

That's great that you'll be getting new discussion boards. Right now I use the Google UseNet ones and find most of the people there to be very random and unreliable. The topics of conversation are often not related to anything constructive and it's difficult to get responses to constructive posts. I look forward to seeing you get the new discussion section up and running. I'll definitely contribute to them.

Overall you do have a pretty nice site. I get a lot of information from here and have found it to be an invaluable resource. I'm very optimistic about them finding a cure or significantly better treatment in the next 5 to 10 years. With all of the study involving glutamate, serotonin, dopamine, gaba, acetylcholine, different neural pathways, and new drug discoveries, I predict the next few sets of drugs to be released will help tremendously.

Hi Cory,

Thanks for your follow up comments.

We appreciate the constructive criticism - we're always trying to improve the site (unfortunately we always have a lot less in the way of time and resources than we'd really like).

We're working on a lot of different projects right now - some of which are visible (like the discussion areas) some of which won't be visible for a while (some software that we're working with researchers on to help people with schizophrenia).

Your comments about usability are important - information is of no value if it isn't easy to find. So - we'll keep working on that.

Thanks - and please do keep up the constructive critism - (but we also always appreciate some words of thanks when we do something right too! We're only human too :-)

I think it is wonderful what the administrators for this site are doing and I admire them for keeping up with it all. It is not easy maintaining a site such as this. I look forward to the site getting back up and running. Thank you for your hard work
