New Software to Help People with Schizophrenia
A new web-based software program (CopingTutor.com) has been announced to help reduce the distress, and improve functioning in people with schizophrenia. The new program does this by helping people to learn psychological techniques used in the well-proven approach called Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT).
Following is a brief background on CBT for schizophrenia, as reported in the PsychiatricTimes:
"CBT is now recognized as an effective intervention for schizophrenia in clinical guidelines developed in the United States and in Europe. In spite of the evidence base and absence of side effects, however, the general availability of this treatment approach within community settings is still low."
A new company (CHI) has been formed to help bring a new self-help program to market that trains people on the same techniques used in CBT for Schizophrenia, including a focus on reducing the distress caused by voices.
The program was developed with the help of experts in CBT for schizophrenia, including the two experts out of the Harvard University/Mass General CBT for Schzophrenia Program, who schizophrenia.com interviewed back in 2007 (see the full interview here: CBT for Schizophrenia, an interview with experts
The new self help software program is Internet-based, and has been judged positively by early testers. Clinical studies funded by NARSAD (now, the Brain and Behavior Research Foundation) during the past year also indicated positive outcomes. Additional clinical studies are will start shortly, including one that will include hundreds of participants and run for the next three years.
